Garnet

Garnet is a mineral group, not one red gemstone. Choose the species or variety first: red garnet, rhodolite, spessartine, tsavorite and demantoid need separate comparisons.

01 / Colors & varieties

Find your starting point.

Rhodolite is associated with pyrope–almandine mixtures; tsavorite is green grossular and demantoid is green andradite. Similar color does not make them interchangeable.

Select a specimen to add its color or variety to your request. Confirm appearance and availability with the offered lot.

A closer look before you choose

Identity and durability

Garnet is a mineral group, not one uniform gem. Its cubic structure is singly refractive; chemistry and durability vary by species. Mohs hardness is roughly 6.5–7.5. Do not assume every variety is equally suitable for an exposed everyday ring.

Colours and value

Green demantoid is andradite; green tsavorite is grossular. Orange spessartine, purple-red rhodolite, peach-toned malaia and colour-change garnets broaden the palette. Demantoid has high dispersion, but visible fire also depends on colour and cut. Compare similar varieties rather than a universal price ranking.

Sources and provenance

Demantoid occurs in Russia and other countries; a horsetail inclusion alone does not prove Russian origin, since examples occur elsewhere. Tsavorite is associated with East Africa. Request any available origin evidence, and view colour-change stones under clearly identified daylight and incandescent illumination.

Treatments and reports

Garnets are commonly sold untreated, but this is not a guarantee for every stone: demantoid heating and clarity enhancement have been reported. Ask for the species or variety and detectable-treatment findings. AAA is a seller’s description, not an internationally standardized garnet grade.

Jewellery and meaningful gifts

Tsavorite suits vivid green jewellery, spessartine brings warm orange, and rhodolite offers rich red-purple colour. Garnet is January’s birthstone and belongs to Thailand’s traditional nine-gem set. Protection and traveller’s-talisman stories are symbolism; they do not establish health benefits or future value.

Care and buying checks

Check face-up brightness, dark areas, cut, millimetre dimensions, carat weight and fractures. Discuss a protective setting for softer or included material. Warm soapy water is a gentle cleaning choice; avoid steam and temperature shocks, and obtain advice before ultrasonic cleaning.

Name the variety

Keep variety and any supporting identification with each lot. Do not combine differently identified garnets into a single price comparison.

Match the parcel specification

For matched stones, request a size tolerance, color range and shape. Record the number of stones as well as the combined weight.

Ask about the actual material

Ask for natural identity, treatment disclosure and photographs. Neither a variety label nor a display image confirms a current lot.

03 / Price basis

A clear specification before a price.

Prices and availability are confirmed against an actual lot. These request units are not fixed price bands. No approved live selling rates are published for this collection.

For a lot, describe its contents in the notes. 1 metric carat = 0.2 g; 1 kg = 1,000 g. A piece or lot has no fixed weight.

Before you choose a lot

Are tsavorite and demantoid the same green garnet?

No. They belong to different garnet species. Specify which you need rather than using “green garnet” alone.

Is a red garnet price a guide to every garnet?

No. Compare identified material with similar size, appearance, form and disclosed treatment, quoted on the same unit basis.

What should be confirmed before ordering?

Request actual-lot photographs, identity and treatment information, availability, currency, shipping and tax terms. Origin preferences and report requests need separate confirmation.

Start with a question

Explore another gemstone or follow a buying question to the relevant guide.

Before you agree to a gemstone purchase

Use this checklist for the actual stone or lot. Collection illustrations and general descriptions are not proof of identity, origin or availability.

  1. Ask for current photos or video of the identified lot, with dimensions in millimeters, weight and number of pieces.

  2. Request written disclosure of natural or laboratory-grown identity, known treatments and any origin claim. Match a report to the actual stone and verify its number with the issuing laboratory.

  3. Confirm total price, currency, unit, delivery, taxes, payment and return terms in writing before agreeing.

  4. For a Bangkok visit, contact the company first to confirm an appointment and the stones you wish to inspect. Bring your dimensions, budget and report requirements.

Questions that help you choose

Does the same carat weight mean the same size?

No. Carat measures weight: 1 ct = 0.2 g. Different densities, shapes and cutting proportions give different face-up sizes. For a setting, request length × width × depth in millimeters as well as weight; for rough, ask for usable dimensions and visible fractures.

What does a laboratory report establish?

Read the scope and conclusions of that particular report. Identification, treatment findings and origin opinions are different questions. A report is not a price guarantee or proof that a seller currently has the stone. Check that the documented item matches the offer.

How the quotation works

Prices for these collections are confirmed per lot. A gram, carat, piece or lot rate must match the material being offered. Amber price bands and bulk discounts do not apply automatically to other gemstones.
