01 / Colors & varieties

These colour preferences help start a conversation; they are not laboratory grades. Trade usage of the name rubellite varies. Compare the actual stones under the same lighting.

A closer look before you choose

Identity and durability

Rubellite is a trade name for pink-to-red or purplish-red tourmaline, commonly elbaite. Its colour boundaries are not universally standardized. Staying red under two light sources is not a definitive identity test. Tourmaline has Mohs hardness 7–7.5 and needs protection from knocks and heat.

Colours and value

Raspberry, magenta and rich red tones offer different moods. Manganese-related colour, saturation, face-up brightness, cutting and size influence appearance. Inclusions are common in red tourmaline; they do not prove natural origin. Inspect fractures and dark areas as well as apparent eye-clean clarity.

Sources and provenance

Brazil, including Minas Gerais, Nigeria, Madagascar and Mozambique supply tourmaline. Country or mine names do not establish an individual stone’s quality or treatment. Ask what origin evidence is available and distinguish a seller’s statement from a laboratory opinion.

Treatments and reports

Heating and irradiation may alter tourmaline colour; some treatments cannot be determined by routine testing. Irradiation-related colour can fade with heat or strong light. Oil or resin may reduce fracture visibility. Request disclosure and the report’s exact scope, without assuming an undetectable treatment was absent.

Jewellery and meaningful gifts

A cushion or emerald cut can make a striking cocktail ring, pendant or earrings. A protective setting helps for rings worn often. Tourmaline is an October birthstone; rubellite’s warm red can mark an anniversary or personal milestone. Choose for beauty and meaning, without assured resale returns.

Care and buying checks

Compare colour in daylight and indoor light, dimensions, individual carat weight and visible fractures. Request actual-stone media and written terms. Use warm soapy water and a soft brush; avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaning, sudden temperature changes and excessive heat.

02 / Buying details

The details that make a useful comparison.

Ask about treatments

Request disclosure of heating, irradiation and any filling. A natural stone is not necessarily untreated, and a report may not detect every treatment.

More buying details

Compare the whole stone

Include length × width × depth, weight per stone and total quantity. Ask for views that show dark areas, inclusions and fractures; rough weight alone cannot predict cutting yield.

Choose and care thoughtfully

Tourmaline has Mohs hardness 7–7.5 but only fair toughness. Protect it from knocks and sudden temperature changes. Clean with warm soapy water; avoid steam and ultrasonic cleaners.

Before you choose a lot

Is rubellite a type of ruby?

No. Rubellite is a trade name for red to pink tourmaline; ruby belongs to corundum. Similar colour does not make them the same material or price category.

Can colour under a lamp prove authenticity?

No. Appearance changes with lighting and viewing direction. Ask for identification of the offered stone; photographs and colour names alone cannot establish authenticity or treatment status.

What should be confirmed before ordering?

Request actual-lot photographs, identity and treatment information, availability, currency, shipping and tax terms. Origin preferences and report requests need separate confirmation.

Start with a question

Explore another gemstone or follow a buying question to the relevant guide.

Before you agree to a gemstone purchase

Use this checklist for the actual stone or lot. Collection illustrations and general descriptions are not proof of identity, origin or availability.

  1. Ask for current photos or video of the identified lot, with dimensions in millimeters, weight and number of pieces.

  2. Request written disclosure of natural or laboratory-grown identity, known treatments and any origin claim. Match a report to the actual stone and verify its number with the issuing laboratory.

  3. Confirm total price, currency, unit, delivery, taxes, payment and return terms in writing before agreeing.

  4. For a Bangkok visit, contact the company first to confirm an appointment and the stones you wish to inspect. Bring your dimensions, budget and report requirements.

Questions that help you choose

Does the same carat weight mean the same size?

No. Carat measures weight: 1 ct = 0.2 g. Different densities, shapes and cutting proportions give different face-up sizes. For a setting, request length × width × depth in millimeters as well as weight; for rough, ask for usable dimensions and visible fractures.

What does a laboratory report establish?

Read the scope and conclusions of that particular report. Identification, treatment findings and origin opinions are different questions. A report is not a price guarantee or proof that a seller currently has the stone. Check that the documented item matches the offer.
