Mohs 9 means excellent scratch resistance, not immunity to chips or fractures. Choose a setting that protects exposed edges and avoid hard impacts.

01 / Colour & form

Choose a colour. Examine the actual stone.

Select a specimen to add its color or variety to your request. Confirm appearance and availability with the offered lot.

Red colour & fluorescence

Chromium contributes red colour and fluorescence. Fluorescence strength varies with composition; a glow alone cannot prove Burmese origin or natural formation.

Pigeon Blood

A trade colour term, not a universal grade applied identically by all laboratories. When it is claimed, check the laboratory, its criteria and the individual stone’s report.

Royal Red & other names

Trade names can describe appearance but do not establish Mozambique origin, absence of heating or the highest value. Compare hue, brightness and saturation under consistent lighting.

02 / Value factors

What makes one stone worth more?

Colour & lighting

Assess hue, saturation, brightness and colour distribution. Request unfiltered photographs or video of the same stone in daylight and indoor light.

Clarity & cut

Check inclusions, surface-reaching fractures, symmetry and face-up brightness. Equal carat weights can give different visible sizes and appearances.

Weight, dimensions & evidence

Separate each stone’s carat weight from the order total; include length × width × depth in millimetres. Compare treatment findings and supporting reports alongside appearance.

03 / Origin

Put origin claims in context

A country name is not a quality grade, and colour cannot establish origin. A laboratory origin conclusion is an expert opinion; some stones remain inconclusive.

Myanmar / Burma
Mogok is an important historic source. Quality varies within a country; request origin evidence for the specific stone.
Mozambique
Montepuez is an important market source. Assess clarity, colour and treatment individually.
Thailand
Chanthaburi and Trat have a history of ruby mining. A dark colour or the name Siam alone cannot establish origin or collectible value.

Country-of-origin identification is different from mine-to-market traceability. Labour or environmental claims need evidence for the particular source and supply chain.

04 / Treatments

Understand exactly what has been disclosed

Rough describes an uncut stone; unheated describes treatment status. A faceted stone can be unheated. These terms are not interchangeable.

No indications of heating
Use the actual report’s wording. Photographs and seller descriptions do not replace examination, and other possible treatments still need consideration.
Heat-treated
Heating can alter colour or clarity and is common in the trade. Ask for a plain-language disclosure and report details, rather than the code H alone.
Heated with flux residues
Flux can assist fissure healing during heating. Read the report’s description and extent of residues. This is different from lead-glass filling.
Fracture- or cavity-filled
Ask which substance was used, such as lead glass or another glass, and the extent of filling. Fillers can affect durability, cleaning and repair; inform the jeweller before work.

Choose around the way it will be worn

Collecting & heirlooms

Choose verifiable quality and documentation rather than a fixed target carat range. A laboratory report is not a valuation or a guarantee of returns or liquidity.

Celebrating achievement

Choose a red you enjoy, comfortable proportions and a budget including the setting. A carefully chosen design can mark an achievement in a distinctly personal way.

Love & anniversaries

Ruby is traditionally associated with July and the 15th and 40th wedding anniversaries. Let the recipient’s taste and intended wear guide the choice.

05 / Compare offers

Make a fair price comparison

  1. First match natural or laboratory-grown identity, form and treatment status.
  2. Compare colour, cut, millimetre dimensions, individual weight and quantity using actual-lot images.
  3. Verify the report number with its issuer and match its measurements, weight and image to the offered stone.
  4. Separate per-carat, per-gram, per-stone and per-lot rates; state the currency and total.
  5. Include confirmed report, setting, shipping and tax costs, plus the seller’s written return terms.
  6. Share your budget and a competing offer; request up to three alternatives with clear reasons for any price difference.

Specify the quotation basis

Rough: give total grams, or a lot count with its contents described. Faceted stones: give carats per stone, dimensions and quantity. Keep individual weight separate from total weight. Rough weight does not guarantee a finished cutting yield.

06 / Care & questions

Match care to the stone’s condition

Sound natural stones without filling or dyeing can generally be cleaned with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft brush. For filled or dyed material, use a damp cloth and avoid heat, chemicals, ultrasonic and steam cleaning. If treatment is unknown, seek professional advice first.

Questions before you decide

Is flux-assisted heating the same as lead-glass filling?

No. Fissure healing during heating can leave residues; glass filling is a different process. Read the laboratory’s treatment and extent descriptions and tell the jeweller before setting or repair.

Does unheated status alone determine a ruby’s value?

No. Colour, clarity, cut, size and documented origin still matter. A no-heat finding can be significant, but neither a fixed price multiplier nor a market-wide rarity percentage should be assumed.

What should be confirmed before ordering?

Request actual-lot photographs, identity and treatment information, availability, currency, shipping and tax terms. Origin preferences and report requests need separate confirmation.

Start with a question

Explore another gemstone or follow a buying question to the relevant guide.

Before you agree to a gemstone purchase

Use this checklist for the actual stone or lot. Collection illustrations and general descriptions are not proof of identity, origin or availability.

  1. Ask for current photos or video of the identified lot, with dimensions in millimeters, weight and number of pieces.

  2. Request written disclosure of natural or laboratory-grown identity, known treatments and any origin claim. Match a report to the actual stone and verify its number with the issuing laboratory.

  3. Confirm total price, currency, unit, delivery, taxes, payment and return terms in writing before agreeing.

  4. For a Bangkok visit, contact the company first to confirm an appointment and the stones you wish to inspect. Bring your dimensions, budget and report requirements.

Questions that help you choose

Ruby or red spinel for a ring?

Both can suit rings. Ruby is corundum with Mohs hardness 9; spinel is a different mineral with hardness 8. Compare color in consistent light, dimensions, condition, treatment and the actual offer. A red appearance alone cannot identify the mineral.

Does the same carat weight mean the same size?

No. Carat measures weight: 1 ct = 0.2 g. Different densities, shapes and cutting proportions give different face-up sizes. For a setting, request length × width × depth in millimeters as well as weight; for rough, ask for usable dimensions and visible fractures.

What does a laboratory report establish?

Read the scope and conclusions of that particular report. Identification, treatment findings and origin opinions are different questions. A report is not a price guarantee or proof that a seller currently has the stone. Check that the documented item matches the offer.

How the quotation works

Prices for these collections are confirmed per lot. A gram, carat, piece or lot rate must match the material being offered. Amber price bands and bulk discounts do not apply automatically to other gemstones.
